Magic Smithing
The art of creating magic objects is long and
difficult, the wizard must be present during the entire time it takes to
physically manufacture the item chanting the spell over and over into the
object. Some mages hire master craftsmen to make the object, other (such
as most dwarven mages) do this themselves. The cost of doing this is the
same as the spell, but this must be paid every hour of manufacture. The
process usually leaves out a single word, this will then act as a command
word.
In theory a magical item could be made out of
anything, but if the material has some relevance to the spell being cast
then the spell has more chance of working.
Each uses of the item will reduce the duration
part of the spell used in the creation, so each magical artefact only has
a limited number of uses. The length of each use should be stated during
the manufacture of the item
Chance of success:
There is a base chance of 25% that a spell will
succeed (checked every hour), but this is modified as follows:
+2% per level of the caster
-1% per 5 spell points used in the spell
+ material suitability (this is a decision made
by the DM, but I recommend no more than 50%)
The roll for success is made every hour, and in
secret, therefore the mage must complete the object before finding out
whether he has succeeded or not.
Example: Gauntlets of Dexterity +4
The Spell:
Duration of 4 weeks
(40320 rounds, to be spent 5 rounds at a time)
Spatial of 1 cubic yard
(Physical Enhancement will only work on a whole being)
Physical Enhancement of +4 Dexterity

If the gloves were made out of soft doe skin,
took 4 solid hours to make, and the spell cast by a 10th level mage the
chance of success would be:

Basic cost
For the level of the caster
For the spell cost
For the non-magical, but relevant material

This check would be made 4 times by the
DM, and if just one check failed, the gloves would be just ordinary gloves. |
Some of you may have realized that no permanent
magical items can be created using this method, items such as swords are
usually created by binding a magical creature into it. This is done using
the phase pool and then the non-weapon proficiency of Rune Knowledge, it
still requires the casting every hour, and the checks, but the failure
of one of those checks or the failure of the Runic ward could have disastrous
effects with the release of a potentially dangerous and angry magical creature.
